INTRODUCING MEGAN ASPINALL

Meegan Aspinall - December 2010Pictured here is Megan in late November 2010 readying to complete some circuit training with Tony Provan in a Cessna 152

Megan was awarded one of the four Mobil Aviation Flying Scholarships made available in 2010.

Megan has just completed her 5th year of a 6 year Aerospace Engineering/Commerce Degree Course at Monash University.

Megan’s application for the scholarship identified an interest in aviation from an early age with trips to the airport and at the age of 13 she shared with her grandfather her dream of one day becoming a pilot.

This discussion led to Megan receiving from her grandfather the book “Through the Overcast” which was his prize for graduating top of his secondary school class in the 1940’s. “Through the Overcast” was first published in 1938 and is a classic textbook on the art of instrument flying. Unfortunately, due to difficult financial times in country Victoria, Megan’s grandfather was unable capitalise on the skills detailed in the book.

A trial instructional flight at Lilydale airport as a 16th birthday present from her father whet Megan’s appetite to learn more of the why and how of flight and led to her current course which appealed due to her aviation and engineering interests.

As part of her degree, Megan has worked part time as an engineering intern at Aerosonde Pty Ltd who specialise in the design, testing and manufacture of Unmanned Aerial Systems. Megan has had the chance to remotely operate the control surfaces of a UAS.

Megan is now, through the Mobil Aviation Flying Scholarship, able to apply her formal learning in to the practical aspects of flight as a pilot.
